The St. Louis Blues were founded in 1967. This season the Blues celebrate 50 years in the NHL in St. Louis. They are the oldest NHL team never to win the Stanley Cup. Wouldn’t it be fitting if this was the year? Haven’t we waited long enough?
Since the NFL Rams left town, there is a little more of a buzz surrounding this franchise. But they have something to prove. The St. Louis Blues have been to the playoffs 5 years in a row. Even 25 straight appearances to the playoffs from 1980-2004. 40 total playoff appearances, but no rings.
The Blues made the tough decision to let go of some of their older most tenured players, most namely David Backes in the off season. Now they look to build with youth and find a way to break through. Recently the Blues traded for former 1st overall pick Nail Yakupov who scored his first career goal for the Blues on October 13th.
For the Blues, they have talent. But they will have to take a huge step this year. A lot of uncertainty surrounds this team. Guys like Jake Allen and Vladimir Tarasensko will have to lead this team, to be successful.
Do they have enough to make the playoffs this year? I think so. Do they have enough to make a run at the Stanley Cup? I guess we will find out. But I think I can speak for a good chunk of Missourians, I am looking forward to this season. Hopefully they are ready to take the next step.
